How to Use a Time Difference Calculator

A time difference calculator converts time between two cities or time zones, accounting for UTC offsets and daylight saving time changes.

Step 1: Select your two cities

Choose the city you're calling FROM and the city you're calling TO. For example:

From: New York
To: Dubai

Step 2: Note the time difference

New York (EST, UTC-5) to Dubai (GST, UTC+4) = 9 hours ahead

So when it's 9 AM in New York, it's 6 PM in Dubai.

Step 3: Account for DST

During US daylight saving time (March-November):

New York shifts to EDT (UTC-4)
Dubai doesn't change (no DST)
Difference becomes 8 hours instead of 9

Step 4: Find overlapping business hours

New YorkDubaiStatus
7:00 AM4:00 PM✅ Both working
9:00 AM6:00 PM⚠️ End of day Dubai
11:00 AM8:00 PM❌ After hours Dubai

Common mistakes to avoid

1Forgetting DST transitions — The time difference is not constant throughout the year
2Using abbreviations ambiguously — IST could be India, Ireland, or Israel
3Not considering lunch hours — 12 PM in one zone might be midnight in another
4Ignoring weekends — Friday in one country might be Saturday/Sunday in another (especially across the Date Line)
